In the latest software update, Apple has reportedly resolved the "ghost touch" glitch that has affected certain users of the Apple Watch 9 and Apple Watch Ultra. This problem, where the device registers taps and swipes without actual touch input, was initially reported in older models back in 2020 but resurfaced in Series 9 models in early February. Installing WatchOS 10.4 should eliminate this issue, as stated in the release notes, which mention it as the cause of false touches on the display experienced by some users.

Last month, Apple issued a memorandum authorizing Apple Service Providers to refrain from replacing affected watches and confirmed that the problem was under investigation. According to the memo, the false-touch problem may have caused the screen on impacted Apple Watch models to behave erratically, initiate unintended phone calls, or hinder users from entering device passcodes — significantly impacting user experience with the latest models. Therefore, the rollout of this fix is welcome news.

A Solution Beyond Basic Repairs

While the exact extent of the issue remains uncertain, numerous Reddit discussions indicate its widespread occurrence. This problem prompted some users to question the value of investing in the latest models. However, several commentators reported no encounters with the issue, even when using beta software from developers.

Apple's recent memo advised users to keep their smartwatches updated, implying that installing WatchOS 10.4 is essential not only for resolving these particular issues but also for other reasons.

In addition to addressing the phantom touch problem, the update delivers a refreshed appearance for almost every app, introduces a new Smart Stack widget, and implements enhancements such as passcode requirements for ApplePay users utilizing AssistiveTouch, as well as fixes for contact-syncing issues.

For those anticipating a more extensive operating system overhaul, expectations point towards the release of WatchOS 11 in September, likely coinciding with the launch of Apple Watch 10 and the Apple iPhone 16.
