The future of academia is poised for transformation with the rise of AI language models like ChatGPT. Here are some other tools that are worth exploring.

"ChatGPT is set to revolutionize academic research. However, many academics are unsure how to leverage its capabilities effectively," stated Mushtaq Bilal, a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Southern Denmark, on X.The intersection of academia and artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly evident, and as AI progresses, academics are likely to either embrace its possibilities or express concerns about its implications."In academia, there are two distinct groups: early AI adopters and those who believe AI compromises academic integrity," Bilal explained to Euronews Next.

He aligns himself strongly with the first group.

As a Pakistani-born professor based in Denmark, he envisions that, if employed judiciously, AI language models could democratize education and facilitate the generation of more knowledge.

While many experts have highlighted concerns about the reliability and quality of output from language models like ChatGPT, citing potential biases, constraints, or inaccuracies, Bilal argues that recognizing these limitations and adopting the right strategy can enable language models to "perform a significant amount of high-quality work," particularly in academia.

Progressive prompting for constructing a 'framework'

To develop a structure suitable for academic work, Bilal emphasizes the importance of mastering incremental prompting, a method commonly used in behavioral therapy and special education. This technique involves breaking down complex tasks into smaller, more manageable steps and providing prompts or cues to assist in completing each step successfully. These prompts then progressively increase in complexity. In behavioral therapy, incremental prompting helps individuals build confidence. In the context of language models, it enables the generation of "much more sophisticated responses."In a discussion on X (formerly Twitter), Bilal showcased how he used incremental prompting to guide ChatGPT in creating a detailed outline for a journal article. He began by querying the AI about specific concepts relevant to his research, then proceeded to inquire about authors and their ideas, gradually directing the chatbot to understand the context of his essay.

Consensus is a concept deeply ingrained in various aspects of human interaction, ranging from social dynamics to decision-making processes. At its core, consensus refers to a general agreement or unity of opinion among a group of individuals. Achieving consensus often involves navigating through differing perspectives, finding common ground, and ultimately reaching a shared understanding or decision that satisfies the majority, if not all, participants.

In many contexts, consensus is seen as a desirable outcome, as it reflects a collective acceptance of a particular course of action or idea. It can foster a sense of cohesion and cooperation within groups, leading to more effective problem-solving and decision-making outcomes. Furthermore, consensus-driven approaches often prioritize inclusivity and strive to ensure that the voices of all stakeholders are heard and considered.

While language models like ChatGPT are not designed to deceive, they can generate text that lacks factual basis and may include fake citations to nonexistent papers. However, an AI-powered app called Scite provides genuine citations to published papers, offering a valuable tool for improving workflows, according to Bilal.Similar to Elicit, Scite provides detailed lists of all the papers cited in response to a question. Additionally, it can indicate if a claim has been refuted or supported by various sources or journals, providing the exact number of corroborations or refutations. Bilal considers Scite to be a powerful tool and would include it in any seminar on writing.

What potential does AI offer for the future of research?

In his recent blog post titled 'The Age of AI Has Begun,' Bill Gates likened the impact of AI development to that of the microprocessor, personal computer, Internet, and mobile phone. He expressed optimism that AI-driven software will soon revolutionize education, a promise that traditional computers have not fully delivered on yet.
