Apple allows retro game emulators on App Store
Apple's App Store now permits retro game emulators, marking a significant shift in its policy, providing users access to classic gaming experiences.
Apple's recent policy changes include allowing retro console emulators on the App Store, a significant departure from its previous stance. This move is expected to enable existing Android emulators to be available on iPhones, potentially eliminating the need for users to seek alternative methods like jailbreaking. This shift also aligns with the EU's recent decision to allow third-party app stores, potentially stemming the tide of users exploring alternatives. Additionally, Apple updated its regulations for super apps like WeChat, requiring mini-games and mini-apps within these platforms to use HTML5 rather than native formats. These adjustments are seen as responses to antitrust pressure, particularly from the US, and demands from the European Commission. Furthermore, Apple announced changes allowing music streaming apps in the EU to include in-app links to external purchases and pricing information. However, Spotify remains dissatisfied as Apple plans to continue charging commissions on purchases made through these links, despite EU directives.
Spotify spokesperson Jeanne Moran emphasizes that adhering to the law is mandatory, and Apple's persistent defiance of the EU's decision is concerning. With the Commission empowered to initiate noncompliance proceedings and impose daily fines starting April 6th, Moran stresses the necessity for decisive action to ensure consumers have genuine options.
