As we approach the summer holidays, Google is unveiling a series of travel updates, positioning itself prominently in the travel planning process and gaining deeper insights into purchasing behavior in the travel industry.

Firstly, Google is introducing an update to its Search Generative Experience (SGE), allowing users to create travel itineraries and trip concepts using AI. This announcement was made on Wednesday.

This new feature, currently accessible only in English within the United States to users participating in Search Labs, a program enabling users to test early-stage Google Search features and provide feedback, utilizes input from various websites, as well as reviews, photos, and other details submitted by users to Google for destinations worldwide.

When users request a specific trip, such as a three-day historical tour of Philadelphia, they will receive a sample itinerary detailing attractions, restaurants, and options for flights and accommodations, organized by time of day.

At present, these itineraries are solely informational, without the capability to purchase services or experiences directly. Once satisfied with the itinerary, users can export it to Gmail, Docs, or Maps.

Google has not disclosed any plans regarding the broader rollout of this feature, but it reflects the company's ongoing experimentation with the application of its AI technology. Various players in the travel industry are closely observing the potential impact of generative AI on travel services, with some eagerly embracing it while others remain cautious. Meanwhile, startups like Mindtrip and Layla are actively developing AI assistants to assist users in trip planning.

With this latest update, Google is not only competing with these startups but also collecting valuable data on travel purchasing intent, which can benefit its broader advertising business. Additionally, it allows Google to gauge user interest in such services.

Google has revealed improvements in discovering recommendation lists within Google Maps, currently available in specific cities across the U.S. and Canada. Upon searching for a city in Maps, users will encounter curated lists of recommended destinations from sources such as The Infatuation, as well as contributions from other users. Additionally, users will find curated lists featuring top, trending, and hidden gem restaurants in over 40 U.S. cities.

Lastly, Google is introducing additional features to enhance customization of user-created lists, enabling better organization of travel plans and sharing of favorite spots with friends and family. Users can now arrange the order of places within a list according to their preferences, whether prioritizing top favorites or arranging them chronologically like an itinerary. Additionally, users have the option to link content from their social channels to their lists.
