We are currently experiencing a substantial and swift "learning transformation." This shift involves embracing new, immersive methods to develop influential learning experiences that can result in the desired performance improvement. Additionally, L&D teams are actively seeking ways to assess the efficacy of learning initiatives.

In 2018, I anticipate a broader application of mLearning across various corporate training needs, along with its enhanced role in supporting informal learning and the digitization of Instructor-Led Training (ILT).

Furthermore, there will be a growing emphasis on utilizing formats that align with learners' daily routines, such as Apps and videos. These formats will be employed not only for formal learning but also for informal learning, with a particular focus on reinforcement through assessments and practice exercises to facilitate skill acquisition and mastery.

Digitization Of ILT (To Blended or Fully Online)
I anticipate a continued acceleration in the digitization of Instructor-Led Training (ILT), with a particular emphasis on a blended approach rather than a complete shift to fully online training.

For example,

 I anticipate that training programs such as induction and onboarding will embrace a blended approach.
 Programs like application simulation training will likely adopt a fully online model, supplemented by practice sessions on the actual tool.

Furthermore, the evolution of microlearning formats is expected to become more diverse, with a notable emphasis on incorporating "learning paths." These learning paths not only provide a structured learning journey for participants but also ensure continuous engagement throughout the year through a variety of microlearning nuggets.

Performance Support Tools (PSTs)

In 2018, there will be a notable increase in providing Performance Support Tools (PSTs) through smartphones, ensuring that these learning aids seamlessly integrate into the learner's workflow and are readily accessible at the precise moment of their learning requirement.

Capitalizing on the widespread adoption of microlearning, PSTs will play a crucial role in supporting both primary formal training and instructor-led training (ILT), enabling organizations to witness the practical application of acquired knowledge.

Gamification

Over the past five years, there has been a notable shift in the perception of gamification in corporate training, transforming it from skepticism to an integral component of organizational learning strategies. This trend is expected to persist and expand, with gamification being incorporated into programs that traditionally underutilized or sparingly used it, such as compliance and application simulation-based training.

Social Learning

While learning from and with others is a natural aspect of human behavior, the recognition and incorporation of social learning as a crucial component of corporate training have gained prominence in the last few years. Anticipating a continued upward trajectory, there is an expected rise in the utilization of social learning platforms or portals to encourage a culture of collaborative learning within organizations.

Mobile Apps or Apps for Learning

The global number of app downloads reached an astounding 197 billion in 2017, reflecting the frequent use of apps in our daily lives. Consequently, the application of mobile apps for learning is a logical progression. In 2018, there is an expected surge in the incorporation of mobile apps as a substantial component of corporate training. These apps will harness the power of microlearning, including learning paths, and incorporate gamification. The adaptability of personalization and the ability to connect with learners through notifications for updates will further solidify their significance.

Video-Basid Learning (Videos and Interactive Videos)
The significance of videos in learning is undeniable. If learners were to be surveyed, videos would undoubtedly rank among their top three preferred learning formats. However, traditional video-based learning faces the challenge of passivity, with learners often forgetting the content after 60 seconds. In 2018, there will be increased investment in videos that incorporate interactivities, interim knowledge checks, branching based on learner choices, and end-of-program assessments. Additionally, there will be a trend of integrating YouTube videos to construct specific learning paths, akin to topics in other online courses, allowing for the tracking of learners' progress and performance.
Next Gen-LMS/LCMS

In the 2017 eLearning Trends and Predictions, I emphasized the importance of LMS/LCMS platforms aligning with the preferred learning styles of individuals. This trend is expected to persist in 2018, witnessing a shift from traditional corporate LMS platforms that "push" training programs to more personalized learning paths that learners can actively "pull." Essential features now include the flexibility to learn offline and sync with the LMS when online.

Rapid and Completely Responsive e Learning Tools

The upcoming year will witness additional improvements in development ease, focusing on rapid and fully responsive designs to align with microlearning requirements. This will also ensure flexibility in integrating trending learning strategies and high-impact formats.

Informal Learning 

Organizations are recognizing that allocating the budget solely to formal and structured training is insufficient. There is a growing emphasis on providing learners with diverse learning channels, ensuring access to specific information when faced with challenges, and promoting collaborative learning. In 2018, there will be an increased focus on integrating Performance Support Tools (PSTs) into training, offering just-in-time learning aids to learners, with this trend gaining momentum.

Section 2- Coming of age- An Increase In Adoption
Learning Portals 

Initially conceived for specific programs requiring a higher level of learner engagement than traditional LMS platforms, learning portals have evolved to function as standalone platforms or coexist with LMS. These portals prioritize learner-centric approaches, granting learners greater control. Their popularity stems from their tailored design to meet specific and distinct needs. Typically including a personalized learning path with diverse resource formats and collaboration features, they excel in capturing detailed learner analytics, surpassing the capabilities of traditional LMS.

Anticipating a rise in their adoption, I foresee learning portals gaining popularity in 2018, particularly as many legacy LMS platforms lack this capability. The evolution of learning portals in 2019 will be intriguing, especially with comparable features emerging in next-gen LMSs.

Personalization

In 2018, we can expect a growth in personalized learning strategies, acknowledging that a one-size-fits-all approach is not suitable for everyone. Organizations will utilize assessments or surveys, such as pre-tests, to determine learners' interests and proficiency levels, enabling the creation of personalized learning paths. Interim check-points with formative feedback will allow redirection to alternative training aspects, based on learner engagement with various assets, leading to dynamic and personalized recommendations.

Curation 

Thanks to the internet, vast knowledge is now readily available, but sorting through the options to determine relevance can be time-consuming. This is where content curation becomes essential. A curator, typically an expert, sifts through data and creates a learning path aligned with specific objectives.

Learners are presented with curated learning paths, offering the flexibility to adjust them as needed. They can also share and recommend assets from the portal. The process can become more inclusive by allowing learners to contribute and enhance the repository.

Can artificial intelligence (AI) completely replace the tasks performed by L&D teams, such as determining which courses learners should take and providing additional resources? Not quite!

However, leveraging insights from learning analytics, particularly xAPI, AI can significantly enhance the learning experience by recommending assets that aid learners in achieving their desired goals, whether it's skill enhancement or behavioral change. By gaining insights into learner motivation, behavior, and their interactions within the learning path—such as navigation patterns, browsing preferences, and time spent on various activities—we can potentially utilize AI to guide learners toward unexplored areas.

It will be intriguing to observe which of the existing LMS providers will be the first to incorporate this capability in 2018.

AR/VR for Immersive Learning 

Certainly, augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) offer highly immersive learning experiences. While these technologies gained significant traction in 2017 and are poised for further growth in 2018, they come with substantial costs and longer development lead times.

The initial adoption has been witnessed in training programs designed for hazardous work environments, such as Health and Safety training, and complex simulations. Notably, mobile apps with embedded AR features are starting to be utilized.

The expectation is that, over time, AR/VR will replace scenarios, including branching scenarios, and video-based learning aimed at inducing behavioral change. This transition will likely bring about a paradigm shift in the way training is delivered and experienced.

Big Data-Reporting and Analytics and its Usage in the Determination Of ROI 

Big Data encompasses extensive data collected from diverse sources, including Learning Management Systems (LMS), Learning Content Management Systems (LCMS), learning portals, and surveys, assessments, or polling within the eLearning domain. Due to its sheer volume, intricacy, and dynamic nature, there is currently no tool capable of effectively managing and analyzing this data.

Big Data reporting and analytics involve methods to present this data in formats suitable for analysis, decision-making, and action. When processed appropriately, this data can provide profound insights into how learners acquire knowledge, the impact of training on skills or behavioral changes, and its overall influence on the business. This, in turn, aids in evaluating the Return on Investment (ROI) for training expenditures.

The anticipation is an upsurge in Big Data reporting and analytics in 2018, contributing to the continued optimization of training delivery. This analytical approach can be employed to comprehend learner behavior, preferred learning methods, and the learning paths chosen by the learners, facilitating updates to existing training delivery.
