However, as we're now deep into 2024, universities have had ample time—over a year—to comprehend both the capabilities and limitations of this technology. They've likely been strategizing on how best to address its utilization.

AI's role in education: Improved access and real-world readiness

When effectively utilized, AI tools can organize and elucidate vast quantities of information, aid students in brainstorming and formulating plausible counterarguments, and, to some extent, assist in paper preparation.

Moreover, AI fosters equity by elevating everyone to a certain standard, which is particularly beneficial for students facing additional educational needs and grappling with various accessibility challenges. On the faculty side, AI holds the potential to handle mundane and repetitive administrative tasks like syllabus creation and email management, thereby allowing lecturers to invest more time in nurturing faculty-student relationships, which have been gradually slipping away over the years, fostering a sense of mentorship that universities are striving to reclaim.

In today's climate, prospective students are increasingly skeptical of the promises made by higher education institutions, often feeling disillusioned by the perceived gap between expectations and reality.

While some students may not fully trust ChatGPT, Professor Richard Harvey of the School of Computer Sciences at the University of East Anglia (UK) believes it can promote deeper criticism and reflection. Interestingly, Harvey observes that his students are more skeptical of AI-generated code, subjecting it to rigorous testing compared to code they produce themselves, which they often assume to be correct.
